LeoVegas won the battle in court and received a 5-year license in Sweden. Read below our online casino reviews and latest lifestyle news.
A few days ago, LeoVegas achieved a very important victory in court, which paved the way for the company to finally obtain a covenantal extension of 5 years of its Swedish online gambling license in Sweden. The company’s CEO Gustaf Hagman told the media that this LeoVegas license authorization confirms that the company is conducting a professional and responsible operation.
LeoVegas boasts being one of the first online gambling operators to be licensed by the Swedish Gambling Authority – Spelinspektionen. The company obtained its license at the end of 2018 – in November. However, Sweden has been preparing for quite some time the implementation of the new gambling law and the new regulatory regime for gambling in the Scandinavian countries came into force on 1 January 2019. Under these new rules, only companies licensed by the local regulator were allowed to engage in betting and casino activities games on the territory of Sweden.
This greatly damages LeoVegas, which was among the first international companies to be licensed by Spelinspektionen. Thus, the gambling company received only a permit to operate on the newly reorganized Swedish market for 2 years. On the other hand, most of the other operators who were allowed to enter the local iGaming space were licensed for 5 years by the local regulator.
Spelinspektionen has revealed that it granted LeoVegas a short-term license due to its fine in the United Kingdom last spring. The UK Gambling Commission has fined £ 600,000 on the online gambling operator for not one or two offenses. One of the biggest mistakes was that the operator sent marketing materials and advertisements to gamblers who signed up to her self-exclusion system to encourage them to play, which is strictly forbidden.
After obtaining a two-year license in Sweden, LeoVegas appealed to the court, hoping to extend it to a full five-year term. The company appealed this decision to Spelinspektionen in the Administrative Court in Linköping.
Earlier this month, the court ruled that LeoVegas was entitled to fulfill its full 5-year license. What actually dictated this decision? The court ruled in favor of the operator that the breaches of its UK license conditions had occurred in 2016 and that since then LeoVegas has taken the necessary measures to deal with problems in its self-exclusion controls and to ensure that they are complied with.
